THE CROWS CALL
What Is The Crows Call?
Mae lives in a run-down cottage with her uncle and aunt. She finds an old scarecrow in a field, which gives her a way to escape her unhappy home. Mae fixes the scarecrow, stitching its tears and adding a second eye, finishing with a handmade necktie.
One day, Mae falls asleep next to the scarecrow. When she wakes up, it's dark, and she rushes home. Her uncle accuses her of seeing a boy, then hits her. He locks her in her room, and Mae decides she must leave.
That night, Mae dreams of the scarecrow being destroyed by crows. She then thinks she wakes up to find her aunt unresponsive, and when Mae tries to escape, her aunt doesn't react. Mae wakes up again, this time for real, determined to leave.
She packs a bag, says goodbye to the scarecrow, kisses him, and takes back the necktie. As she cycles away, the necktie is now around her neck. Mae rides off into the distance.
